Our Programs

Throughout its history, the Center for Rural Strategies has worked toward a more prosperous rural America through the tools of strategic communications, coalition building, media and public information campaigns, and public policy.

This work exists at the intersections of economic development, healthcare, broadband, education, immigration, climate and the environment, transportation, and more. By working across this broad range of issues, we hope to advance progress toward just and equitable outcomes for rural communities.

We produce and distribute media, create coalitions that cut across sectors and geographies, commission research, and conduct public information campaigns. Our organization is built on alliances with like-minded institutions, nonprofits, and social change activists.

Our major ongoing projects include:

  • The Daily Yonder, a digital news platform that covers rural news for a national audience of rural residents, advocates, policymakers, and journalists;

  • The Rural Assembly, which works at the local, regional, and national levels to build more opportunity and better policy for rural communities across the country; and

  • Rural Remix, a podcast co-produced by the Daily Yonder and the Rural Assembly dedicated to showcasing deeper, richer stories about life in rural places.

Rural Strategies also takes on a variety of other projects in partnership with nonprofit organizations, policymakers, and philanthropies. Some of our current projects include in-depth media and community engagement work related to Folk Arts and Traditions in Appalachia and Rural Churches and Faith Communities.
